Pre-Recording Checklist
Before beginning a recording session, complete the following checks to ensure safe and reliable operation of the Explore amplifier and accessories. We strongly recommend completing this checklist before you start collecting ExG data.
Device Preparation
-
Battery charged (green LED at start-up).
-
Amplifier disconnected from USB charging cable.
-
Correct operating mode chosen (offline, wired or wireless streaming).
-
Internal memory available (no pink blinking at start-up). Format if necessary (⚠️ this deletes all data stored on the amplifier).
Electrodes and Cap
-
EEG cap in correct size for participant.
-
Reference electrode placed properly (e.g., mastoids or earlobe).
-
Place the measurement electrodes on your subject in your preferred configuration. Each channel (1 – 8; 1 – 16; 1 – 32) is recorded against the reference electrode. For convenience, channel numbers are marked on the electrodes.
-
Mapping of channel number to electrode position is documented. Apply pre-configured montage in Explore Desktop if desired.
-
Electrodes seated firmly in the cap holders.
-
For gel electrodes: apply conductive gel to establish low-impedance connection.
-
For dry electrodes: ensure good contact of electrode to skin. Move hair, if needed. Ensure brush electrodes are standing upright.
Install software
-
Install the software appropriate for your needs. An overview of our open-source APIs can be found on the software page of our website or in our GitHub Repo.
Impedance and Signal Quality
-
Run an impedance check via Explore Desktop, Explore Mobile, or explorepy.
-
Ensure all channels are within acceptable impedance range. Common acceptability thresholds are < 30 kΩ for gel electrodes and < 300 kΩ for dry electrodes.
-
Re-apply gel or adjust electrodes if values are too high.
-
Refer to Lowering Impedance.
Environment
-
Recording environment free of strong electromagnetic interference (Wi-Fi routers or smartphones very close to the amplifier).
-
Comfortable temperature and humidity for participant.
-
Minimal movement or vibration expected during recording (unless movement is part of the protocol).
Software and Data Management
-
Correct device selected in Explore Desktop/Mobile via Bluetooth ID.
-
Recording directory or storage device prepared with sufficient free space.
